The Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority (BoMRA) has successfully concluded an intensive three-day enforcement campaign aimed at combating the distribution of unsafe and substandard medical products in Kasane and the surrounding areas.
The operation was carried out jointly with other enforcement agencies in the area. Two teams were deployed to key locations, one focused on street vendors, local shops, and pharmaceutical outlets, while the other was stationed at the Kazungula One-Stop Border Post, a major entry point commonly used by traffickers to smuggle substandard medical products and unsafe cosmetics into the country.
Seven cases have been filed, with offenders charged under Section 23 of the Medicines and Related Substances Act (MRSA). The individuals are liable to a fine not exceeding BWP 100,000.00, imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years, or both.
The accused individuals include:
- Five (5) Botswana nationals
- One (1) man of Asian descent
- One (1) Zambian national
The enforcement campaign highlights BoMRA’s ongoing commitment to combat the distribution of unsafe and substandard medical products in Botswana while safeguarding public health and safety.
BoMRA advises the public to exercise caution and avoid purchasing medical products from street vendors or unauthorised individuals, as these products may be of poor quality, unsafe, or pose serious health risks.
